The flexibility timeline devised as part of Bridging the Gap 2022 project brings together a wide range of flexibility-enabling commitments, actions, plans and strategies from across the energy industry. Together, they will help achieve the flexibility milestones we identified and set the foundations for a flexible energy system by 2035.

So that we can see how we’re working towards more flexibility across the whole energy sector, we’re sharing a flexibility timeline tracker to show progress against each of the actions identified for between now and 2025. This gives us an overview of what is happening and helps join the dots between activities relating to the 2025 milestones for investment, customers, roles and responsibilities, markets and digitalisation.

This infographic summarises the progress across all 38 actions (priority actions are in bold), for between now and 2025. For more detail on each action, please use the link below. This tracker will be updated on a six monthly basis.

Key messages

1. Flexibility needs broad and large-scale investment to start now

Strategic investment is needed in flexibility related assets, which are digitalised and interoperable. This is alongside the need for urgent market reform and investment in all networks.

2. Consumers are part of the solution

Unlocking end-consumer flexibility is fundamental to effectively managing a fully decarbonised energy system. Facilitating access to this flexibility is complex and needs to start now.

3. Net zero needs cross-sector coordination

A whole system approach to coordinating the delivery of net zero across the country is required to prioritise and drive action.
