Meet the ESO Markets Advisory Council (MAC)

The ESO has a central role today in GB energy market design. The MAC has recently been established to inform our approach to strategic market design and delivery, based on robust evidence, international best practice, and the needs of and impacts on wider industry. 

The group is made up of experts from all parts of the electricity value chain including networks, generators, flexibility providers and academia.

Steve Jennings - MAC Chair

Steve is an experienced Board Advisor and NED with over 30 years’ experience in the Energy sector. He led PwC’s Energy practice in the UK and now holds senior roles with companies enabling key aspects of the energy transition.

Mark Copley – CEO, European Federation of Energy Traders

Previously at BEIS, Mark worked on energy aspects of the Trade and Cooperation Agreement with the EU and sat on the Board of ACER and CEER. He oversaw work on wholesale markets at Ofgem and developed the first European Network Codes at ENTSO-E. 

Rachel Fletcher – Director of Regulation and Economics, Octopus Energy

Rachel’s remit at Octopus is to create the regulations and markets needed to achieve net zero quickly and affordably. Rachel was previously Chief Executive of Ofwat and was as a Senior Partner and Board member of Ofgem.

Sotiris Georgiopoulos – Head of Smart Grid Development, UK Power Networks (UKPN)

Sotiris leads UKPN’s flexibility markets activities and the establishment of UKPN’s DSO. Committed to driving collaboration to deliver a smarter, more flexible network and facilitate Net Zero, Sotiris is also Chair of the ENA’s Open Networks project.

Robert Gross - Director, UK Energy Research Centre

Robert is Professor of Energy Policy and Technology at Imperial College, where he was the Director for the Centre for Energy Policy and Technology (ICEPT) and Director of Policy at the Energy Futures Lab. He has extensive post-graduate training experience

Angela Love – Director of Future Markets and Engagement, Elexon

Angela has over 30 years energy markets experience covering most aspects of the energy value chain. She has dedicated a lot of her career to ensuring decision-making is consumer centric and that energy markets act in the interests of consumers.

Andrew McAleavey – Founder, CFO and COO, Penso Power Ltd

Andrew leads Penso Power’s efforts to build and maximise the value of its battery storage projects. Andrew has over 25 years’ experience in a range of finance roles including interim CFO of Limejump. Andrew is a qualified management accountant.

Angus MacRae – Director of Energy Economics, SSE

Angus leads the SSE Energy Business’ electricity market economics and energy code governance functions and has a wide range of experience across the energy generation and use landscape gained over 35 years spent mostly in the electricity industry.

Alastair Martin – Founder and Chief Strategy Officer, Flexitricity

Alastair is a professional energy engineer with over 26 years of experience in the energy industry. He founded the first Demand Side Response (DSR) business in Great Britain in 2004.

Dr Cathy McClay OBE – Trading and Optimisation Director, Sembcorp Energy UK

Prior to joining Sembcorp, Cathy was Head of Future Markets at National Grid SO where a key focus was on opening up the ancillary services markets to new sources of flexibility such as demand side response.

Guy Newey – Director of Strategy, Energy Systems Catapult

Guy has 15 years’ experience across the energy sector, including: advising two Secretaries of State in Government; at the energy supplier, OVO Energy; and at the think tank, Policy Exchange.

Richard Nourse – Founder, Greencoat Capital

Richard Nourse is founder of Greencoat Capital LLP, the leading UK renewables investor. He previously had a short spell as a civil servant after many years in the City, latterly as Head of EMEA Energy and Power for Merrill Lynch.

Rebecca Sedler – Commercial Director, National Grid Ventures

Rebecca is a member of National Grid Interconnectors Executive Team.  Having undertaken commercial and strategic roles at both EDF and E.ON over the last 20 years, Rebecca is passionate about people, decarbonisation and customer advocacy.

Paul Troughton – Senior Director of Regulatory Affairs, Enel X UK

Paul has worked in demand response for more than ten years, with direct experience of the markets in Australia, New Zealand, Great Britain, and Ireland, and exposure to market design issues in other parts of Europe, Asia, and the Americas.

Simon Virley – Vice Chair and Head of Energy and Natural Resources, KPMG

Prior to joining KPMG in 2015, Simon had 25 years in the UK Government, and was latterly DG Energy in the Department of Energy and Climate Change and led the Electricity Market Reform Programme 2010-15.

Marzia Zafar – Director of Sustainability and Energy Policy, Kaluza

Marzia is a leader in energy transition and disruptive technologies. Marzia has a proven ability to build value for stakeholders in leadership roles spanning government, Fortune 500 companies, start-ups and nonprofits.
