Fraser MacMillan recognised at National Skills Academy Awards

Fraser Macmillan, one of our extremely talented Data Scientists, was last night named a runner up in the Rising Star category at the National Skills Academy for Power Awards. We asked to film a short video about his career journey and how all his qualifications and training led him to the ESO.

It started with a degree in electro-mechanical engineering at the University of Strathclyde, where Fraser secured a placement at National Grid ESO in his second year. After finishing university, he was offered a place on the company’s graduate scheme in a research and development role. Today he explores how machine learning and artificial intelligence could benefit the various functions of the system operator.

In the video, Fraser explains how he’s extremely lucky to get to work on such innovative projects at National Grid ESO. Right now, his team is researching how the company might integrate machine learning with PowerFactory simulations to automate stability assessments. With this integration, National Grid ESO will be able to investigate more scenarios than is feasibly possible right now.  

Although he didn’t win, being named a finalist at the National Skills Academy for Power Awards is a huge achievement for Fraser and one we are extremely proud of. Well done to Fraser and his team for their successes. Watch Fraser’s video HERE.
