Bridging the Gap to Net Zero: 3 months on

It has been three months since we published our Bridging the Gap report and we wanted to share some of the work we have done since then.

The FES: Bridging the gap to net zero programme takes a closer look at what needs to be done to reach the UK’s 2050 net zero target.

Through the programme, we identify and investigate the areas from our recent future energy scenarios (FES) publication that we consider to be the most important and the most uncertain. With FES 2021 due to be published in just a few weeks, it’s an exciting time to look at what actions we can take to move towards net zero.

This year’s Bridging the Gap project looked at peaks and troughs: how data and digitalisation, technology and markets can help meet the challenges of a decarbonised electricity system.

These recommendations represent an industry view of how we can make the most out of data, digitalisation, technology and markets to help us manage the challenges of increasing levels of renewable electricity generation.

Since launching Bridging the Gap, the ESO has started work on the Road to Zero, which is a review of electricity markets and how they need to change to facilitate net zero. This collaborative piece work builds directly on the recommendations within Bridging the Gap. More information can be found here.

We’ve also been working with BEIS and Ofgem on the development of the second Smart Systems and Flexibility, which brings together markets, digitalisation and technology to shape a plan for decarbonisation.

As we head towards FES 2021, now is the time to review your actions and the recommendations relevant to you in the Bridging the Gap report.

Are you taking the right actions to enable the UKs 2050 net zero target?
