List of all balancing services

Here you will find a complete (a-z) of all balancing services and related areas.

List all of balancing services

Black start

Find out about providing a black start service to us. Black start is the procedure to recover from a total or partial shutdown of the transmission system.

Find out more

BM start up

On-the-day access to additional generation Balancing Mechanism units (BMUs) that would not otherwise have run.

Find out more

Demand side response (DSR)

Demand side response (DSR) is all about intelligent energy use. Find out how DSR can help business and consumers save on total energy costs and reduce their carbon footprint.

Find out more

Demand turn up

Developed to allow demand side providers to increase demand as an economic solution to managing excess renewable generation when demand is low.

Find out more

Enhanced frequency response (EFR)

EFR is a service, open to both BM and non-BM providers to provide frequency response in one second or less.

Find out more

Enhanced reactive power service (ERPS)

Provision of voltage support that exceeds the minimum technical requirement of the obligatory reactive power service (ORPS).

Find out more

Fast reserve

Fast reserve provides rapid and reliable delivery of active power through increasing output from generation or reducing consumption from demand sources.

Find out more

Firm frequency response (FFR)

Firm Frequency Response (FFR) is the firm provision of dynamic or non-dynamic response to changes in frequency. Find out about tendering with us.

Find out more

Intertrips

Intertrip services are required as an automatic control arrangement, where generation may be reduced or disconnected following a system fault event.

Find out more

Mandatory response services

Mandatory Frequency Response is an automatic change in active power output in response to a frequency change and is a Grid Code requirement.

Find out more

Obligatory reactive power service (ORPS)

Provision of varying reactive power output. At any given output generators may be requested to produce or absorb reactive power to help manage system voltages.

Find out more

Short term operating reserve (STOR)

Short term operating reserve (STOR) is a service that provides additional active power from generation or demand reduction.

Find out more

Super SEL

The ability for synchronous generation to reduce their minimum generation level (SEL) in times of low demand on the system.

Find out more

System operator to system operator (SO to SO)

SO to SO services are provided mutually with other transmission system operators connected to Britain's transmission system via interconnectors.

Find out more

Transmission constraint management

Required where the electricity transmission system is unable to transmit power to the location of demand due to congestion at one or more parts of the transmission network.

Find out more

List of related pages

Balancing framework and the Balancing and Settlement Code (BSC)

Documents required by our licence and details relating to the electricity balancing system (EBS) project.

Find out more

Balancing Services Use of System (BSUoS) charges

BSUoS recovers the cost of day-to-day operation of the transmission system. These charges apply to suppliers and generators.

Find out more

Future frequency response products

To improve and develop our balancing services products and markets, we are investigating what a new, faster-acting frequency response product suite may look like.

Find out more

Future of balancing services

A smart, flexible system that makes the best use of all the energy resources available will enable us to meet our customers’ needs in a balanced, efficient and economical way.

Find out more

Settlements

Find the forms you need to set up or change bank details with us, to change a reactive meter, change a contact or want to find out about statements, estimates and invoicing.

Find out more

Trading

Power exchange trades, forward trades, and balancing contract enactment to meet forecast requirements at minimum cost in advance of the balancing mechanism.
