We are becoming a separate company

In April 2019, the Electricity System Operator is becoming a separate company within the National Grid Group. Find out more about what this change will mean.

Network charging developments and Charging Futures

On this page, you can find out about future changes to the charges to use the network. You can also find out how to learn more about these changes and get involved through Charging Futures.

The energy system in Great Britain is transitioning to a low carbon, smart and flexible future. Significant changes to how users are charged to use the network are needed to help achieve this. These changes will affect how much all users pay to use the electricity network.

What is Charging Futures?

Charging Futures is the place to go to: learn more about network charging, understand the future changes and find out how to get involved.

Charging Futures is the programme coordinating these changes. It aims to give all industry stakeholders the opportunity to take part in shaping the changes. It delivers this by making it easier for network users to:

  • learn about network charging and fully understand the changes
  • ask industry experts questions to understand the impacts
  • contribute no matter their size.

Visit the Charging Futures website to learn about any changes and sign up to the Charging Futures Forum for the opportunity to contribute.

Charging Futures lets network users engage in a range of ways to make it easier for you to learn, have your voices heard and keep up to date with developments. These include:

  • the Charging Futures Forum
  • live webinars
  • podcasts
  • summary notes.

Our on-going role as lead secretariat for Charging Futures is part of our commitment to improve competition in markets. By making it easier to understand and get involved in the reform, Charging Futures supports equality in network charging. This is an important part of delivering the future energy system which drives value for the consumer.

What is changing?

All charges to use the network are currently under review and the changes will likely impact all network users.

These reviews will make changes to the following charges:

  • Transmission Network Use of System (TNUoS)
  • Distribution Use of System (DUoS)
  • Balancing Services Use of System (BSUoS).

These reviews may change which users pay certain charges, as well as what the methods are for deciding how much a user pays. Since this will change the costs for all types of users, Charging Futures will help users understand and impact these changes.

Sign up to the Charging Futures distribution list to stay up to date with all the opportunities to be involved.
