We are becoming a separate company

In April 2019, the Electricity System Operator is becoming a separate company within the National Grid Group. Find out more about what this change will mean.

Black start

Black start is the procedure we use to restore power in the event of a total or partial shutdown of the national electricity transmission system. On this page, you will find out about providing a black start service.

We contract for black start services throughout the year.

We assess each potential provider’s contribution to black start capability, while also attempting to minimise distortion to the energy market.

This includes making an assessment of:

  • the potential to provide the required availability (i.e. maintain warm state) without exporting megawatts on to the network;
  • the ability to provide black start capability across zones and contribute to restoration timescales in neighbouring zones; and
  • the ability to start generating units independently if more than one is contracted at a physical location.
